Sara was born in Australia to British parents and first came to South Africa at the age of 10 along with her two sisters, one of whom is profoundly deaf. Sara attended school in the west of Joburg and completed her schooling in 1982 with a distinction in English and a firm ambition to get in the world of advertising. At the time, there were no marketing degrees in existence, so a BA with majors in Industrial Psychology and English was the basis for her career.
After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand, Sara spent the first 15 years of her career in the advertising world for international companies such as Wunderman Young & Rubicam and Leo Burnett – working first in strategic planning but later becoming a client service executive and business unit director.
Feeling that there was just more to communication, Sara left the advertising world in 1999 to work with clients in a more holistic (or in those days a “through the line”) approach to marketing and communication and Adzone Consultants was formed.
The history of the company follows (see under history). Sara initially built a vibrant small communications agency but later evolved the business to be consultant based with a firm emphasis on helping clients develop strategies that work.
Sara is the founder and Strategic Director of the business and provides strategic development and facilitation directly to clients, as well as through partner agencies and communication firms. She is passionate about business, the country and working to make strategy and enjoyable process, easy to embrace and to implement.
Sara loves to read, cook, and travel, is a keen bird watcher, has two grown-up children and is married to Graeme Butchart.
